It is becoming more evident everyday that goes by that I need others in order to maintain the quality of life I enjoy. Star
t making steps to get to know those around you. You can start with your neighbors. Invite them over for a bbq, start a community garden, attend your local farmers market or start one of your own.
There is strength and knowledge in numbers. No one person can do or know everything. Not so long ago in the distance past the first question a person would ask was not who you were/what you do, but what village are you from. Character, knowledge and safety was built by community. You were only good as the community you were from because many times your life would depend on those people.
The times ahead for humanity will be challenging, but I believe we can meet these challenges head on with
sustainable, productive and interconnected communities. We already know for example that we cannot sustain transporting our food from 1500 miles away. We need to go back to growing our food locally. We need to take back the quality/safety of the food we eat from mega corporations and put it back in the hands of local farmers. Farmers who’s family you know personally, see them daily in town and know they are eating the same quality food you are. People who care about your well being instead of thinking how they are going to make the next buck off you.
We need to bring doctors back home to the towns they live in instead of working at large insurance based
health care facilities where decisions on your health are made on how much it is going to cost the company and not what you need. I grew up being run through HMO’s who ran patients threw like cattle in a chute on the way to the slaughter house. I never knew which “doctor in training” I would see next because they were all on their way to somewhere else. I never knew “my” doctor. Could you imagine the care I could have gotten if the doctor actually knew me and my family? Maybe I would have gotten that MRI I needed because it wasn’t about the bottom line of the insurance company based 3000 miles away, but about my health and well being!
