The “Farm” as we call it, is 1 acre fenced in on a 30 acre piece we share with our wonderful landlord who entertains our farm frivolities.
We raise our chickens, rabbits, worms, and try and grow as much of our own food as we can. There is a beautiful creek at the bottom of the property that we take a dip in when it gets too hot, a wonderful ridgeline that we hike up to see the wonderful views, and a great deal of wildlife that we take great joy in.
No property is perfect – we are in a canyon (called Hell’s Hole on the USGS) that is on the north slope of this mountain. During the winter, it can get very cold and with few hours of sunlight. During the summertime, there is a great amount of sun and heat, but because of the canyon, there are strong breezes that can gust up to 50 mph – wonderful for wind generators but bad for plants!
One of our great joys is that we are only 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and are protected from the cold fog by our mountain range. This gives us a wonderful diversity of climates and geographies to choose our day from…on hot days, go out to the coast, and on cold days stay in and keep warm!
This property has been a great joy and labor to live on and create gardens and living setups for animals, but above all, it has been a great learning experience.
